West Africa's Answer to Batana Oil?
Batana oil has taken the hair world by storm - but here is what most people do not know. Batana is simply a specific type of palm kernel oil, extracted from the American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera) and traditionally roasted by the indigenous Miskito people of Honduras.
Our Adwengo, the Ghanaian Palm Kernel Oil, is its West African counterpart - drawn from the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), completely unrefined and fire-roasted using the same generational craft. The result? A deeply nourishing oil with a naturally smoky, coffee-like character that no commercial oil can replicate. Same origin story. Different continent and just as potent.
The Sensory Experience: Rich, Smoky, and Raw
Unlike mass-produced, chemically bleached oils that arrive clear and odourless, our Ghanaian Palm Kernel Oil is completely unrefined and roasted the traditional way.
- The Aroma: A comforting, naturally complex scent of smoky, wood-fired coffee with warm, earthy undertones - the hallmark of artisanal roasting
- The Colour: A stunning deep amber-orange - that warm, burnished hue is your guarantee of a genuinely unrefined, traditionally roasted unrefined palm kernel oil
- The Texture: A velvety solid at room temperature that melts instantly into a luxurious oil on contact with skin or hair
Why It Outperforms the Trends
- Deep Moisture Lock: Exceptionally high in fatty acids that penetrate the hair shaft to prevent breakage and snap - just like Batana oil
- Traditional Fire-Roasting: The smoky coffee undertones are not an additive - they are proof of the same artisanal roasting process that made Batana famous
- Completely Unrefined: Every nutrient, every fatty acid, every drop of goodness is preserved exactly as nature intended
- Scalp Soothing: Rich emollient properties calm dryness and create a healthy foundation for growth
- Directly Traded: Small-batch crafted by Ghanaian producers working with our community partners - not mass-processed
How to Use
- For Scalp Care: Part your hair and massage a small amount directly onto the scalp to soothe dryness and promote a healthy foundation for growth
- For Length Protection: Apply from mid-shaft to ends to seal in moisture, tame frizz, and prevent split ends
- As a Deep Treatment: Warm the oil, apply generously from root to tip, cover with a cap for 30 minutes, then wash out for an intense moisture boost
Due to the traditional hand-manufacturing process, jars may contain natural sediments from the fruit - this does not affect the oil's efficacy.
Ingredients
100% Pure, Unrefined Elaeis guineensis (Palm) Kernel Oil. Ethically sourced from Ghana.
Introduction and Benefits
Palm Kernel Oil is extracted from the kernel - the inner seed - of the palm fruit (Elaeis guineensis), native to West Africa. Our version is completely unrefined and traditionally roasted, giving it that signature deep amber-orange colour and smoky, coffee-like aroma that mass-produced oils simply cannot replicate.
Known in Ghana as Adwengo, this oil has been used for generations to nourish hair and skin. It is West Africa's answer to the now-famous Batana oil - sharing the same botanical family, the same fire-roasting tradition, and the same deeply emollient properties. The difference? Ours comes straight from the source.
Key Benefits
- Deep moisture lock: High in lauric and oleic acids that penetrate the hair shaft to reduce breakage and snap
- Scalp nourishment: Soothes dryness, calms irritation, and supports a healthy environment for hair growth
- Intense emollient: Seals moisture into both hair and skin without a greasy finish
- Soapmaking powerhouse: Produces a hard, gentle bar soap with excellent lather - a natural substitute for coconut oil
- Completely unrefined: Every fatty acid and nutrient is preserved exactly as nature intended

Traditional Uses
In Ghana and across West Africa, Palm Kernel Oil - known locally as Adwengo - has been used for centuries as a hair and skin treatment, a cooking fat, and a base for traditional soap. The roasting process, carried out over open fires, is a generational craft that deepens the oil's colour, intensifies its aroma, and is believed to enhance its nourishing properties.
Origin and Sourcing
Our Palm Kernel Oil is sourced directly from Ghana, West Africa - the heartland of this oil's tradition. We work with small-scale producers and community cooperatives who use time-honoured, hand-crafted methods to press and roast the oil in small batches.
This is not a commodity oil. Every jar represents a direct relationship between Sheabutter Cottage and the Ghanaian communities who produce it - ensuring fair returns for the producers and an uncompromised product for you. No middlemen. No mass processing. Just the real thing.
Due to the traditional hand-manufacturing process, jars may contain natural sediments from the fruit. This does not affect the oil's quality or efficacy - it is simply a sign of an authentic, unrefined product.
Common Questions
Is this the same as Batana oil?
Not exactly - but they are close cousins. Batana oil comes from the American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera), native to Central and South America, and is traditionally roasted by the indigenous Miskito people of Honduras. Our Palm Kernel Oil comes from the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and is roasted using the same fire-roasting tradition in Ghana. Both oils share a very similar fatty acid profile and deliver the same deeply nourishing, emollient benefits - the key differences are geographic origin and botanical species.
Will the smoky scent transfer to my hair?
The aroma is naturally present in the oil and may be noticeable during application, particularly when used as a warm deep treatment. Most users find it fades significantly once the hair is dry. If you are sensitive to scent, try using a smaller amount or blending with a lighter carrier oil such as argan or jojoba.
Can I use this on my face?
We would not recommend it for facial use. Palm Kernel Oil has a comedogenic rating of 4, meaning it is likely to clog pores and may trigger breakouts on facial skin. It is best reserved for hair, scalp, and body use.
